Here’s How Trump’s Sexism Is Destroying Women’s Lives

5yrs ago from Raw Story
Trump is a wrecking ball of male ego, who has rolled over women from his Manhattan playboy days to the presidency. Now in the Oval Office, his sexism is magnified by his need for the Religious Right as a base. He has weakened equal pay laws, restated the Gag Rule and lined up a Supreme Court nominee who wants to reverse Roe vs. Wade. The man is waging a war on women. His presidency is …

Federal Judge Orders Wisconsin to Pay for Gender Reassignment Surgery for Two Medicaid Recipients

5yrs ago from The Blaze
Wisconsin must pay the gender reassignment surgery for two transgender Medicaid recipients, a federal judge in Madison has ruled. What happened? Cody Flack of Green Bay and Sara Ann Makenzie of Baraboo filed a lawsuit in April that claimed that Wisconsin's denial of coverage for transgender surgeries violated the Affordable Care Act and their "equal protection rights," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. A rule that excludes coverage of “undefined transsexual surgery" was adopted in 1996, the report said. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge William Conley granted a preliminary injunction to bar enforcement of the rule. Conley also suggested the injunction be expanded to include “any transgender Medicaid patient whose doctor recommends the surgery,” according to the report. “The likelihood of ongoing, irreparable harm facing these two individual plaintiffs outweighs any marginal impacts on the defendants' stated concerns regarding public health or limiting costs," Conley wrote in a 39-page order. Have they planned surgeries? Flack, 30, could get …

Taming the "Gig" Economy

5yrs ago from Green Left Weekly
"Old fashions please me best; I am not so nice To change true rules for odd inventions." William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew, 1593. On May 21 Australian Greens deputy leader Adam Bandt introduced a small but potentially significant private member's bill into the House of Representatives. It is a bill to re-establish "old fashions", like fairness, equity and justice. The bill is a key step towards taming the gig economy because it re-asserts rules that have been ignored to accommodate odd, and not so nice, inventions. The Fair Work Amendment (Making Australia More Equal) Bill 2018 aims to classify so-called "gig economy" workers as employees to give them minimum pay and workers’ rights.

Actress Demands Male Hollywood Actors Take Pay Cuts If They’re Serious About Equality

5yrs ago from The Blaze
Actress Salma Hayek said that male actors should be open to voluntarily accepting a pay cut if they're serious about evening the playing field in Hollywood's gender wage disparity. What are the details? Hayek, who has made claims to have been personally victimized by disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, is leading the charge against Hollywood to change its policies with an eye toward evening out the industry's wage gap. "It is not just the producers," Hayek said Sunday at a Women in Motion talk at the Cannes Film Festival. "It is actors, too." Hayek — who has been a vocal supporter of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements — then called "time's up" on the entertainment industry's wage gap. "Time's up. You had a good run but it is time now to be generous with the actresses," she added. "If actors ask such inflated fees it will leave nothing for actresses. If the movie's budget …

New Memorial Seeks to Preserve the Memory of Victims of Lynchings

5yrs ago from The Blaze
A new memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, seeks to honor the victims of lynchings in the United States, and to prevent the memory of those crimes from being forgotten. What's the background of the memorial? The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which officially opens on Thursday, will seek to pay tribute to thousands of African-American victims of lynchings. Eight hundred steel columns hanging from the roof of the memorial represent counties across the country where lynchings occurred. Etched in each column are the names of the victims from that county. But the victims were more than just names on a column, and the memorial takes this into an account. Short summaries of the horrors that these people had to endure, some of them incredibly graphic. Statues outside the memorial attempt to illustrate the suffering of slaves in chains, and families being torn apart. The memorial was produced by the nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative. According to …

Early Childhood Educators Strike for Equal Pay

5yrs ago from Green Left Weekly
Thousands of early childhood educators around Australia walked off the job for the third time in 12 months on March 27, as part of the ongoing Big Steps campaign for equal and professional pay. The walk-off came about because of the federal government’s failure to meet the February 1 deadline educators and their union, United Voice, had set for a response to their demand for a fair pay increase. Educators understand that families cannot afford higher childcare fees. This is especially true of working women, as the gender pay gap is a reality in all sectors. Instead, the campaign is demanding that early childhood education and care be sufficiently funded by the federal government.

Federal Sexual Harassment Investigations Are Incredibly Slow: 'They Push You So Hard to Give Up'

5yrs ago from The Week
About 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men who work for a large federal agency say they have been sexually harassed on the job. And if they wish to formally accuse their harasser and pursue some sort of consequences, they must make their claim quickly and then settle in for a long, difficult adjudication process that will likely stretch on for several years. In one case highlighted by The Washington Post, a Justice Department attorney named Christy McCormick spent seven years securing a recommendation from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for her harassment complaint against two male supervisors. The EEOC found in her favor, but nine years after the harassment happened, she has yet to receive back pay or damages. "I almost gave up numerous times," she said of the process. "They push you so hard to give up." After experiencing harassment, federal workers must file a claim within 45 days (private sector employees often have up to 300 days). Then they must go through an EEOC probe, which takes 1,300 days (just over three and a half years) on average, a delay that also has serious negative consequences for the falsely accused. When the EEOC does reach a conclusion, it "can only recommend that a harasser be disciplined or fired," the Post reports. "It cannot order action, and agencies are not required to report whether they took any." Read the full Washington Post report here. Bonnie Kristian

Early Childcare Educators ‘shut the Sector Down’

5yrs ago from Green Left Weekly
More than 6000 early childhood educators walked off the job on March 27 for the third time in 12 months to demand equal pay. In addition, more than 30,000 parents made other arrangements for their children, or kept them at home, to stand in solidarity with childcare workers. The walk-off is part of a nationwide day of action called by the workers’ union United Voice prompted by the failure of the Malcolm Turnbull government to act on equal pay. Early childhood educators are among the lowest paid professionals in Australia. United Voice members told Green Left Weekly: “$21 an hour does not reflect the value of our work, or the value of the children we educate. Educators earn half the average wage despite high levels of qualifications. We study for between 18 months and four years.
